Whether at the beach, the pool or just playing under the backyard sprinkler, our vote for one of summer’s cutest sights is that of a curly kid enjoying the water! During the hottest months of the year, kids and water are definitely a winning combination.

Although some parents prefer swim caps for their curliest youngsters—and, by the way, there are some adorable caps out there now—it’s OK to let your children’s hair get wet; just a few tips and products from Ouidad will help your kids with curly hair maintain their lovely locks even after a day of exciting water play.

If possible, wash and condition your child’s hair with Ouidad’s KRLY Kids collection after he or she spends time in salty ocean water, or in a chlorinated pool. For a quick fix, before a shower or bath is on the agenda, spritz the hair with KRLY Kids Pump and Go spray gel. And, if you’ll be spending an extended amount of time outside, protect those precious ringlets from the sun with Ouidad’s Sun Shield, a spray-in conditioner with UV blockers. (Spray it on prior to sun exposure and any time by the pool or beach when you want to create softer, smoother and shinier curls.)

With Ouidad’s advice and kid-friendly products, your child’s summer—and curly hair—will continue to be simply gorgeous!

Don’t Get All Wound Up Over Your Kids’ Hair Care Routine

Today, even our kids want to look great in less time.  So it’s a good thing you can always count on Ouidad to help keep their hair care regimen simple. Remember these curly hair tips to pare down your kids’ hair care routine:

  1. Skip a wash cycle. Daily shampooing can strip much needed moisture from your child’s delicate hair. Your child’s curl pattern should dictate how often to shampoo. On days when you’re not shampooing, you can rinse hair and detangle with a leave-in conditioner to keep curls looking great.
  2. Shrink styling time. Since styling products can easily slide off wet hair, be sure to use an absorbent cloth, like one made of microfiber, to blot dry your child’s hair in half the time. This way, your products will last longer too since you’ll end up having to apply less.
  3. Banish the brush.  Curly hair should never be brushed. Instead, use a wide-tooth comb to detangle your child’s tresses while hair is still wet.

Now with these time-saving tips, you can spend more time wearing those gorgeous curls and less time getting them!

Happy Father’s Day to Curly Dad Will Smith!

It’s Father’s Day, and curly haired actor and dad Will Smith is making our day here at Ouidad.  The Grammy Award winning actor, rapper and producer boasts a fantastic career that includes over thirty films. He has been called “the most powerful actor on the planet.” Well, you just have to add  “some of the most powerful tresses on the planet” too!  And like a good dad he is passing down his curly ways to his children, who are following in their father’s performing footsteps and adding gorgeous curls and twists!

Willow and Jaden Smith

Smith’s two youngest curly kids – Jaden and Willow – can also list a few on screen successes of their very own. Jaden was his father’s co-star in the poinent film The Pursuit of Happyness, and is now the star of the upcoming film The Karate Kid.  And Willow appeared as Smith’s daughter in I Am Legend and was also in the hit movie Kit Kittredge: An American Girl.

This only proves that Will Smith and his family are great at giving us fans a variety of entertainment options. And while Smith often wears his curls short, we’re glad to see his kids raising the bar on the curly look with style options with true staying power!

Happy Father’s Day to all our curly (and yes, even the not-so-curly) dads!

If you have a curly baby who is now rapidly becoming a curly kid, hair length is probably an important issue for you right now. Some children love long locks, and some even fear getting a haircut. Others do fine with shorter cuts and enjoy the experience of going to a salon. But, in terms of day to day practicality, what’s the best bet for a curly cut?

While long hair does have benefits for curly kids—it helps weigh down the hair a bit and lets the curls fall naturally—medium and shorter hairstyles can work too (and are sometimes easier for tangle control). However, and this may surprise you, the type of cut for a child with curls is actually more important than the hair length! Go for a style that is all one length, with no bangs or layers.

As Ouidad herself said, “If your hairdresser mentions layering, texturizing or thinning, you should run, and fast!” Even better … if you can get to a Ouidad salon, Ouidad’s patented “carving and slicing” method is head and shoulders above other cuts!

Whichever length you choose for your child, don’t forget to manage those curls—and the inevitable tangles!—with all of Ouidad’s KRLY Kids products!

Halle Berry’s Daughter is a Dream in Curls!

Even before she was born, we just knew that Halle Berry’s baby would have to be a beauty! What we didn’t necessarily expect was that she’d be a beauty with a gorgeous head of natural curls!

From the moment the public first got to lay eyes on her, we’ve been mesmerized by Nahla Aubry. Between her too-cute face, her sunny personality and her soft, wavy hair, baby Nahla is absolutely delightful to behold.

Mom (and Dad, model Gabriel Aubry) have allowed her baby curls to grow long and naturally, and her locks have only gotten prettier as she has grown. (Could she be using Ouidad’s KRLY Kids products?)

Now that she’s a full-fledged toddler—she turned two in March—Nahla’s curls are long enough to put into what might be the cutest pig-tails in Hollywood.

Though her parents seem to prefer short haircuts (and Mom sometimes goes for the long and straight look,) it appears that, at least for now, Halle and Gabriel are letting Nahla’s curls grow naturally…and beautifully! And more curls in the world is just the ticket to make Ouidad very happy!

Ban the Brush From Your Curl Routine!

We’ve all heard that ancient piece of advice recommending brushing our hair a hundred strokes a day. Well, if you have a curly kid … banish the thought! In fact, throw out the brush altogether!

One of the most important components of styling and caring for curly hair is using a nice, wide-tooth comb, like the Ouidad Double Detangler. Comb the hair only when it’s wet and well conditioned with our KRLY Kids No More Knots. (If you don’t need the double detangler, Ouidad’s traditional Wide Tooth Comb is perfect for in-shower or bath-time use. It even has a nifty hooked handle so you can hang it in the tub!) Then carefully rinse out the conditioner … or leave it in if you’re using No More Knots as a moisture treatment.

Some other tips for general care of children’s curly hair include washing it infrequently, and using a mild shampoo like KRLY Kids No Time for Tears. However, it’s extremely important to note that whenever you do shampoo, conditioning is a must! Conditioning after every shampoo will moisturize curls to keep them healthy and beautiful.

So, once you’ve cleaned those curls and applied conditioner, break out that good old wide-tooth comb and gently start detangling. Your children—and their curls!—will thank you!

Sometimes our little ones have schedules that rival those of top business executives. Play-dates, preschool, gymnastics class…the fun never ends. Oftentimes parents find that after getting a little breakfast into the kids, it’s a mad dash out the door in the morning.

Some of us have given up on finding matching socks (or even completely clean t-shirts) on mornings like these. But out of control hair – that just won’t cut it! If you have a curly girl who wakes up looking like “electricity has run through her,” what’s a parent to do? As we mentioned previously, Ouidad products can go a long way in helping with this morning madness.

Ouidad also has a great “Curl Q&A” to help answer these types of curl questions. For this particular problem, the answer is simple to help manage their curls and your mornings: your little girl should go to bed with a loose bun or ponytail on the top of the head. Then, in the morning, spray Botanical Boost to wet hair and follow it with a few sprays of KRLY Kids Pump & Go styling gel. Work the gel through the hair with your fingers to define curls – and viola! You’re good to go!

To the delight of mothers everywhere, tear-free shampoos have been around for a while. These shampoos, which still get nice and sudsy but don’t sting tender eyes, are perfect for our littlest bathers. But until Ouidad came along, no tear-free shampoo was designed specifically for kids with curls!

Thank heavens for Ouidad’s No Time for Tears Shampoo! This product is the perfect combination of gentle cleansers and curl-enhancing ingredients. Just massage a small amount into scalp and through the wet hair with your fingertips. Then, distribute the shampoo through the hair with outstretched fingers. (Never bunch or scrub the hair!) Rinse with warm water and follow with KRLY Kids No More Knots conditioner.

With Ouidad’s shampoo, bath or shower time can be a wonderful experience. No more tears and fantastic curls too …what more could a parent (or a KRLY kid) want?!

An Easy Ouidad Way To Combat Winter Hat-Head!

When your curly kid is wearing a warm hat this winter, you’re bound to encounter the dreaded “hat-head.” It’s a given. When a wool or fleece hat is removed from a head of fabulous curls, the results can include everything from flyaway strands, to static and sadly squished ringlets!

Well, here’s a great tip from Ouidad: stick Ouidad’s Kids Pump and Go Spray Gel for KRLY Kids in your diaper bag and give your baby a spritz after removing the hat. If your diaper bag doesn’t have room alongside the containers of cereal, the mounds of wipes and the crayons, check out some new bag options.

If your child has outgrown a diaper bag and an 8.5 oz bottle is just too big for your purse, invest in a small, travel-sized bottle and fill it with the Pump and Go Spray Gel. That way, you can give your gorgeous tot a cold weather touch-up whenever it’s necessary. Good-bye and good riddance, hat head!
