This just in: Ouidad the Queen of Curls and husband and business partner Peter Wise, have been declared New Yorkers of the Week!

NY1, New York City’s 24 Hour Newschannel featured Ouidad and Peter as New Yorkers of the Week, for helping turn curls into a hope for a cure for cancer.

After Ouidad lost her mother to breast cancer, she and Peter began to contribute to research; then Peter came up with a powerful campaign idea in 2001, and Curls for a Cure was born, with proceeds going to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

In 2002 Ouidad herself was diagnosed with breast cancer.  While she won her own fight with the disease, she and husband Peter didn’t stop there, vowing not “to let recovery be the end of [her] battle.” Since its inception, Curls for a Cure has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for research.

We are so pleased that Ouidad and Peter have been recognized for their efforts, and hope that this notice brings additional attention to this worthy cause! Out of adversity springs strength, hope, and growth.

The event took place on October 28 at New York City’s Waldorf-Astoria, and was a great success with the over 1,200 guests raising nearly $1.9 million for research. Elizabeth Hurley was also awarded the 2009 Humanitarian Award for her work as a global ambassador of breast cancer awareness.

There were over 150 breast cancer researchers in attendance who receive funding from the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, and with every $250,000 raised another researcher is sponsored to join the fight. That’s a great statistic and one you can take some credit for too: anyone who donates money to Ouidad’s Curls for a Cure helps fund this research.

Ouidad, who attended the event, says, “the symposium was buzzing with positive energy, and why shouldn’t it? There are many celebrities that use their notoriety to shine a light on some really fabulous charities. This month don’t miss Christina Applegate, Reese Witherspoon and Jessica Simpson who each actively raise funds to help find a cure for breast cancer.

Christina Applegate is not only a breast cancer survivor, but also the founder of Right Action for Women which raises money to provide  all women with adequate breast cancer screenings. Reese Witherspoon is also doing her fair share of fundraising.  Along with Avon’s Walk for Breast Cancer, Witherspoon helped raise $8.1 million in 2008!  And, don’t miss Jessica Simpson’s role as the spokesperson for QVC’s  16th annual “FFANY Shoes on Sale” event, which will donate net  proceeds to breast cancer research and education.

A woman’s hair is a sacred thing. In society it symbolizes beauty and femininity and it can be a large part of what makes us feel like who we are. And for Ouidad, well, it’s her life’s work. So, when a woman loses her hair as a result of cancer treatments, a terrifying time becomes even more overwhelming.

A breast cancer survivor herself, Ouidad knows firsthand about the possible side effects of treatments. While it is a daunting time for any woman, Ouidad wants everyone to know how important it is to try to stay positive. And when those first hairs begin to grow back, it is like a new beginning and something to rejoice in!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Ouidad offers caring guidance on steps for re-growing (and loving) your new hair, post-cancer treatments. She reminds women to be patient while waiting for their hair to grow back. And she also says that it’s import to stay away from coloring for at least a year while your body recovers from the chemotherapy. Curly locks or straight, Ouidad conveys that going through cancer treatments and losing your hair is a drastic and stressful time. So no matter the color, no matter how curly or straight, when it comes to your new hair growth, Ouidad says: “Celebrate that it’s back!”

October is National Brest Cancer Awareness Month

We all know the need for medical research to prevent and cure disease, and when someone has fought the battle and survived a disease, the need and urgency just comes into sharper focus. Ouidad knows the battle that millions of women fight each year with breast cancer. She herself is a survivor.

So in recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ouidad’s Curls for a Cure partner, will be very busy!

Ouidad’s goal is to raise $100,000 this year for research, to add to the quarter million dollars raised since the Curls for a Cure organization began. To help this effort, Ouidad and Curls for a Cure will match your donations – dollar-for-dollar – up to a total matching contribution of $50,000 for 2009 alone!
