Even before she was born, we just knew that Halle Berry’s baby would have to be a beauty! What we didn’t necessarily expect was that she’d be a beauty with a gorgeous head of natural curls!

From the moment the public first got to lay eyes on her, we’ve been mesmerized by Nahla Aubry. Between her too-cute face, her sunny personality and her soft, wavy hair, baby Nahla is absolutely delightful to behold.

Mom (and Dad, model Gabriel Aubry) have allowed her baby curls to grow long and naturally, and her locks have only gotten prettier as she has grown. (Could she be using Ouidad’s KRLY Kids products?)

Now that she’s a full-fledged toddler—she turned two in March—Nahla’s curls are long enough to put into what might be the cutest pig-tails in Hollywood.

Though her parents seem to prefer short haircuts (and Mom sometimes goes for the long and straight look,) it appears that, at least for now, Halle and Gabriel are letting Nahla’s curls grow naturally…and beautifully! And more curls in the world is just the ticket to make Ouidad very happy!

Of course we remember the curly haired Holly Robinson Peete for her roles on 21 Jump Street and Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper.  After all, the actress has been entertaining television audiences with her remarkable talents, while donning a crown of luscious curls, for over two decades.  She definitely exudes the kind of curl confidence that we at Ouidad applaud!

Aside from acting, Peete is a mother, author and activist who always keeps’ up with the latest curly style trends. In the eighties, she wore it big. In the nineties? Loose and wavy.

It’s no secret that guys all over the world have naturally curly hair. Ouidad embraces the different backgrounds and hairstyles of men with curly hair everywhere! Many of these curly clad men face different environmental and practical issues to keeping those curls stylin’. Not a problem – we know that your curly hair can look just as sharp as any other hair type for a classy night out!

While any of our finishing products help add that little ‘something extra’ to a beautiful head of hair for a formal occasion, we at Ouidad suggest using our Styling Mist. For an occasion that lasts until the early hours of the morning, Styling Mist creates a long lasting hold that lets your hair move with you on the dance floor, but won’t flake on your suit or tuxedo.

So remember guys, have fun, be safe, and rock those sexy curls!

Because I Love My Curls!

I don’t know what it is like to be a teenager with curly hair and to not like it. Growing up as the daughter of the Queen of Curl (Ouidad), I never had the chance to experience a bad hair day. I never had the frustration of frizzy, big, out-of-control hair. I never fell to the pressure of straightening my hair because I loved the spring and bounce it brought to my life. I was always asked why I don’t straighten my hair and I always replied with the same answer . . . “Because I love my curls!”

When I was in High School, I was envied because my hair always looked good. It looked good because I knew how to work with it. During school and in between classes, I would go into the bathroom and style my classmates’ hair and teach them about the Ouidad techniques. This was always easy because I had great products like Climate Control and Botanical Boost. When prom came around, I did a lot of curly styles and I realized that I was taking away my friends’ frustration with their hair. Some of the girls said that I inspired them to love their curls! What a compliment!!

Now I am in the salon working and listening to clients talk about their own hair frustrations from over the years. I think how lucky I am to not have this anxiety with my hair. I work with teens and college-age clients and show them how to work with their hair. I am very lucky to do something I love!

What One Ouidad Product Should I Use Asked My Client?

Upon finishing a brand new cut and style for a first time client she reiterated a familiar request,  “If I had to choose just one product what should I pick?” And to make an additional note, this client claimed, she has tons of hair products in her bathroom and she doesn’t need one more…same old story.

Curly hair though has two faces to make it beautiful – inside the curl and out. During the summer months with high humidity and active lifestyles, I recommend deep treatments to get curls in conditioned shape.  Curls also need curl enhancing styling and finishing products to perform easily.  I use Ouidad’s complete product line.

But what’s the one thing most important for your curly hair? Attitude. When you finally see the results you love and understand….the rest is just practice. Fast and easy comes after getting the curls of your dreams.

Ban the Brush From Your Curl Routine!

We’ve all heard that ancient piece of advice recommending brushing our hair a hundred strokes a day. Well, if you have a curly kid … banish the thought! In fact, throw out the brush altogether!

One of the most important components of styling and caring for curly hair is using a nice, wide-tooth comb, like the Ouidad Double Detangler. Comb the hair only when it’s wet and well conditioned with our KRLY Kids No More Knots. (If you don’t need the double detangler, Ouidad’s traditional Wide Tooth Comb is perfect for in-shower or bath-time use. It even has a nifty hooked handle so you can hang it in the tub!) Then carefully rinse out the conditioner … or leave it in if you’re using No More Knots as a moisture treatment.

Some other tips for general care of children’s curly hair include washing it infrequently, and using a mild shampoo like KRLY Kids No Time for Tears. However, it’s extremely important to note that whenever you do shampoo, conditioning is a must! Conditioning after every shampoo will moisturize curls to keep them healthy and beautiful.

So, once you’ve cleaned those curls and applied conditioner, break out that good old wide-tooth comb and gently start detangling. Your children—and their curls!—will thank you!

Raving About Curly Hair

During my day at Ouidad, I have plenty of clients that are actresses who love wearing their hair curly because they are what directors want – ‘every day people’ who don’t want ‘blown out, curling ironed perfect hair.’  Sounds great to me!

I had an actress in my chair yesterday who is never afraid to try a new look. She has kinky hair and wears it anywhere from long to a short bob, to very layered or bold curly bangs.  She also plays up her looks with lots of color! She says she never lets a hair stylist on set style her hair. She always does her Ouidad “rake and shake” at home and let’s them spruce it up later if they need to, because she’s seen how frizzy and fried it can look with all the irons and harsh blow drying.

This actress wears her hair confidently and proudly and lets her personality shine with her curly do.  We love it when she’s in the salon because she’s always raving about curly hair and complimenting all the clients too!

Often referred to as the classic blond bombshell, Marilyn Monroe knew the beauty of her curls. Whether it was short, sexy waves or soft classic layers; she was easily recognizable as a curly haired beauty.

Marilyn’s comedic charm and beauty radiated throughout her films, capturing the hearts of both men and women with her glamorous qualities, along with her approachable and vulnerable side. Some of her most memorable films include the classic The Seven Year Itch & Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, in which she dons those iconic platinum blonde curls!

That “Marilyn look” and those distinctive curls continue to grace the red carpet today on celebrities like Katherine Heigl and Gwen Stefani, nearly 50 years after Marilyn’s untimely death.

Ouidad and Essence Helps You Love Your Afro with a Modern Twist on the Classic Hairstyle

In the late 60’s and early 70’s, the afro was the hairstyle of choice for many African-American men and women.  For those looking to make a fashion statement it was a funky, new look. And for those who wanted to make a political statement, it was a symbol of power and pride. But for both camps, the afro was a bold statement about self-acceptance and embracing your natural beauty.

Recently, Essence Magazine paid homage to the classic hairstyle in the Beauty/Strands section of the May issue spotlighting modern-day versions of the timeless look

The really good news is that whether you wear your afro asymmetrically, as a low ‘fro, or in any of the myriad of modern ways, both Ouidad and Essence agree: Ouidad’s Double Detangler is a fantastic way to achieve your perfect look! The comb is designed to slide through your curls without ripping, tugging or disturbing the natural curl pattern so you’re ‘fro always looks perfect. Maybe the ‘fro is ready for a major comeback!
