My problem is kinky, curly, and very dry red hair. Even after deep conditioning, using Botanical Boost, and Climate Control, my hair still has the appearence and feel of cotton. I am a 46 year old white woman that has been using black relaxers for the past 15 years in order to deal with the texture more than fighting the curls. Can anything be done to make my hair hang and swing like regular hair?

What is the shortest you can go with thin medium to tight curls? Mine are presently shoulder length (when dry) and I don’t like how straggly it looks. I’m not fortunate enough to have an authentic Ouidad signature cut (yet) so any suggestions for cutting and shaping would be appreciated. I am almost 46 and brunette.

Buena suerte!

Lisa, thank you for writing in; let’s see how we can help you out. The Botanical Boost is designed to help you revive and refresh your curls on days that you are not shampooing and conditioning as well as throughout the day to help you spruce up your curls-this is an excellent leave-in-conditioner. The Climate Control Heat and Humidity Gel is designed to be applied after towel drying your hair after a shower to help you hold your style and to eliminate frizz. Make sure you are applying the product with our Rake and Shake Method which consists of sectioning the hair into 4-6 sections, applying a dollop of product into your palms and then raking the product with your fingers into a section of hair from the ends up to the roots (the ends need the most attention) , when the product has been distributed from the roots to the ends, with the ends of your hair in between your fingers, shake your hair loose and let it fall into its natural pattern. In terms of the Deep Treatment, this is something that you should be doing twice a month to help rehydrate and instill necessary nutrients/proteins into the hair to keep it healthy and functioning optimally. In order for you to achieve that ‘swing and full look’ make sure you use just the right amount of product (I always say use a little at first as you can always add on) and make sure to either naturally let your hair air dry or use a diffuser to minimally disrupt your natural curl pattern. If all of this is still not helping you get your desired look, I would look into a softening treatment which are performed at our flagship salons in Santa Monica, CA and Manhattan, NY. You can view all of the aforementioned products on our website, http://www.ouidad.com as well as the services at our certified salons. I hope this has helped!

Cara, thank you for writing in and expressing interest in Ouidad. The first thing you must do if you do visit a non-certified Ouidad stylist is to tell your stylist not to thin, texturize or layer your hair! Here is why: Layering creates horizontal, shelf like blunt cuts through your mane. The shorter layers shrink up into fat sausage like rolls, forming the dreaded Earmuff Effect. Texturizing has become a catchphrase in the salon world, but it is best left to our straight haired friends. The process involves snipping random pieces of hair to redefine the shape and add dimension to the hair. On curls, these missing sections of hair cause unevenness, unwanted shrinkage and frizz because the balance of each wave is thrown off. Thinning shears are an antiquated tool that look like scissors with tiny combs attached. The shears cut exactly one half of the chosen section of hair, so one half shrinks up into a tight curl and the other half remains long and limp. You also must know that you can go as short as you would like, just make sure to voice your needs during your consultation! Have a great afternoon!

Hi my question is kinda complicated. My curls become flat on the top b/c I wer my hair up for work and the all the curls fall out. I t seems they are more wieghed down after I had my son. Before I had beautiful long curls now I had to cut my hair and struggle to not get frizzy waves. Please help I think my son stole all my curls.

I have a Ouidad cut and really like it. I have shoulder length, very thick curly hair and just turned 45. My problem is that when I sleep on my hair at night, all the curl goes out, and I end up with frizzy hair. I end up shampooing it every day so I don’t have a build-up of conditioner and I can get my curls back! Spritizing it with Botanical Boost doesn’t really help. Any suggestions?

  11. 11Nicoline

    Carey, Good afternoon.
You ask a common question that we find from the curly community. Our best suggestion is for you to sleep with your hair in a loose pony tail to keep your curls in tact. You should not braid or put your hair into a tight pony tail as this will deter your curls form performing the next day. We also recommend that you shampoo 2-3 times per week as over-shampooing will dry out your hair. It is okay to rinse your hair with water on the days you are not shampooing and conditioning, so don’t be afraid to do so in the shower. This would also be a good time to apply Botanical Boost, right after you get out of the shower and towel dry your hair. If you are having real problems with frizz then I would recommend our Climate Control Heat and Humidty Gel which is a great gel to hold your style while fighting the elements to prohibit your hair from becoming frizzy! So, start with a loose pony tail for bedtime and you should be on a good path on days 2 and 3 of not shampooing and conditioning!

Julia, Thank you for contacting us and we are happy to hear about your new son! It is not uncommon for pregnant women to go through changes with their hair patterns due to the hormonal changes of the body, so let’s see if we can get you on a path to embrace your curls once again! In order to attack your frizz, I would suggest one of our best functioning products, Climate Control Heat and Humidity Gel as this product will help you style your hair and eliminate frizz. The formula of this gel is designed to penetrate the hair follicle and protect it from the elements which normally make hair frizz. Make sure that when you apply the product you use our Rake and Shake Method, which consists of sectioning your hair into 4-6 sections and placing a dollop of product into your palms, rubbing your hands together and then ‘raking’ your fingers through your hair until the ends of your hair is between your fingers and then you shake the hair loose and let it fall into its natural curl pattern. You let your hair either air dry naturally or use a diffuser. Another tip, be sure to shampoo and condition 2-3 times per week to keep your hair clean, but not so much that you are drying it out, which is why we recommend 2-3 times per week max. You would also benefit from our Botanical Boost spray leave-in-conditioner, which is an awesome product that helps refresh and revive the curl while keeping in needed moisture. I hope this has shed some light for you!

Hi, I am a tiny person (5 feet, 100 lbs) with medium curly brunette hair down to my mid-back (further if I pull on the curl to lengthen it). It is not in layers. I see Ouidad commented that your length is determined in part by your height and I am going to get my hair cut soon (and have no Ouidad salon within easy driving distance!). What is your advice for choosing a length for a short person? Do you also recommend layers? I am so tired of going to salons where they don’t know how to treat curly hair. Thank you so much for teaching us how to take care of it!

  14. 14Nicoline

Clare, thank you for writing in.
We have some advice for you when you do go to your salon to get a cut, but first we want to tell you that the length of your hair is entirely up to you and your desire. In terms of what to tell your stylist at your appointment, tell them not to layer, thin or texturize your hair. You want to take the bulk out of your hair so your curls will fall into place.

Here is an excerpt from Ouidad’s Curl Talk explaining why not to layer, thin or texturize: “Layering creates horizontal, shelf like blunt cuts through your mane. Thinning shears are an antiquated tool that look like scissors with tiny combs attached. Good luck at your appointment!

    Hi,

I am hoping that you can help me. I have had natural hair all my life but it wasn’t until recently that I wore my hair curly. I am from a mixed heritage and as a result have funky hair. My hair has multiple patterns. In the back after heavy application of a creamy product I get ringlet curls(3b). On the sides, I think due to heat damage it has almost no curl pattern and is frizzy. On the right top side of my head I have curls a mixture of 3b and 3a. The problem is on the left side of my head, it is almost wavy to straight but very frizzy. By day two my all the “wave” on that side of my head is gone. Is there anything I can do to even out my texture and bring the curl back even if its a chemical process? Would the ouidad softening system have any benefits?

    Thanks,

    Ashley

    Hi Ashley,

Thank you for writing in. Based on the information you gave us the softening system would work. If at all possible, I recommend for you to go to our Ouidad Flagship Salon in New York City to receive a free consultation. They can look at your hair and better advise you.

    Have a great afternoon!

    Good luck,

Hi i need some advice for my hair. I have very wavy hair and i just recently got the Ouidad haircut. I have been letting it air dry but it isn’t curling right. My hair dries very frizzy and poofy. I know someone that got it done and it looks amazing, but i just don’t know why mine doesn’t curl good. Any advice?

    Dear Brook,

Thank you for writing in, we recommend using the Climate Control and the Moisture lock leave-in . This duo will help nourish your curls keeping hydrated, controlling the volume, frizz and tangles in all weather conditions. The Rake and shake technique will help you distribute the product evenly throughout the hair; helping you define your curls. Using the Ouidad Rake & Shake technique, apply a nickel size dollop to palms and work evenly to sections of damp hair. Starting at the nape area take a 2″ section of hair from ear to ear, and rake the lotion through; holding section at the end, then shake to reset your curl pattern. Repeat entire process, working in sections to the top of the head to your desired style.

We also recommend using the Ouidad Deep Treatment. It penetrates the hair cuticle to nourish the internal structure of your curls, controlling frizz and dryness of your curls. Helping your curls to grow and keeping them healthy and defined. We recommend using the Ouidad Deep Treatment 1-2 times a month to maintain beautiful healthy curls. If you have any further questions please feel free to contact us at 1-800-677-4247.

Thank you and have a great day.

Hi: I’ve been using Ouidad products for years. I recently battled some anxiety and didn’t eat well for a few months. I’m experiencing a lot of hair loss. Any suggestions?

  20. 20lynda

ps: My hair loss has nothing to do w/ your products (I see that as easy to read into my previous post).
It has everything to do w/ my anxiety and poor eating for a few months.

    Dear Lynda,
Thank you for writing in; we highly recommend consulting with your general physician or dermatologist regarding concerns about hair loss. Some basic tips that will help you diminish hair loss in the mean time if you are coloring your hair on a regular basis, be sure to leave a gap of at least 6 to 8 weeks between each session. Also avoiding tight hairstyles such as braids, buns and ponytails which stretch and pull hair. Hair follicles are made of protein. Therefore, it is advisable to eat a diet rich in protein. Include protein-rich food such as low-fat cheese, eggs, almond, beans sprouts, fish, seafood and yogurt in your diet. Soy milk and tofu are smart additions to the diet, as they are enriched with protein. Calcium is another important nutrient for strengthening the hair follicles and roots in your scalp; include food rich in calcium in your diet. The next thing to a balanced diet is a good night sleep, as irregular sleeping patterns is one of the leading causes for hair loss. Hair care products should be chosen carefully, because they would directly affect the growth of your hair. Never use harsh shampoos, conditioners or stylizing products. Wash your hair regularly in warm water and use a deep conditioner, such as Ouidad’s 12 minute deep treatment Used with heat, the mix of proteins and Amino Acids effectively penetrates hair to bond with the cuticle, leaving hair revived and restructured.

We would recommend using Ouidad 12 minute Deep Treatment. The 12 minute Deep Treatment penetrates through the hair cuticle to nourish the internal structure of your curls, restoring bounce and controlling frizz, helping your curls to grow and stay healthy and defined. We is recommend using the 12minuite Deep Treatment 1-2 times per month depending on the health of your curls. If you have any further questions and or concerns please feel free to contact us. Best of luck in bringing those curls back!

Thank you and have a great day.

    Best wishes,
    Ouidad Customer Service
