Great Advice Leads to a Great Ouidad Experience!

Wednesday, 6 January 2010 by Alex, Stylist

I have a client who has been coming to the New York salon for years. She has been with everyone from Ouidad to Vincent to Ana and now she is in my chair.

She has tried to grow her hair out forever and no matter what, she feels “it just won’t drop.”  So I gave her all of her options, including a softening treatment. She was extremely resistant to this due to her horrible past experiences with relaxers, and didn’t even want to hear about it.  I suggested she go online and read about it on ouidad.com. I also stressed that we don’t use sodium hydroxide but a calcium hydroxide, and we mix it with Deep Treatment so it’s not harsh on the hair.  Again, she didn’t want to hear it but said she would think about it.

Two weeks later she booked an appointment for the softening.  She came in extremely nervous; I expected it.  We did a long consultation to go over what exactly she wanted so I could tweak the formula and the timing.  After it was all said and done, she looked great!

Yesterday she called to say how much she is enjoying her hair. I finally asked what made her change her mind and take the plunge. Her reply, “I knew where I was getting it done,” made me feel good.

Alex, I want to come back to you at some point! Hard to get into the city w/ a baby and I live in Long Island…I have seen you once and you work magic!

I would sell my left kidney to fly to NYC and have my hair cut at Ouidad salon. :) I’m so jealous of those who live in NYC!

    Alex,
If your clients would agree to it, I think the blog readers would LOVE to see before-and-after pictures. If they don’t want their face shown, then maybe just a photo of their hair from the back?

This is a great story. I would love to try the softening treatment someday.

I am interested in the softening treatment but after reading this post am worried about the fact that it involves calcium hydroxide, which over time makes the hair more brittle due to buildup.

I read in Ouidad’s book and several interviews that she describes the treatment as using :sodium: hydroxide. Can you pls confirm? Thank you

Hi Lara, Ouidad developed a system called Softening, which is very similar to straightening. The difference is the percentage of sodium hydroxide and the manipulation to the hair. A 4 to 8 percent concentration of Sodium hydroxide (versus the 11 to 13 percent found in traditional relaxing and straightening) Is blended with Ouidad ‘s Deep Treatment to soften the hair without stripping the life out of it. They customize the percentage and ratio of the ingredients for each client.

Thank you for replying to my comment. I went and had the softening treatment done 2 weeks ago, and I absolutely love the results! My treatment was left in for 5 mins. It was very gentle, so I still have all my curls – they’re just easier to take care of. I love Ouidad!
