Ouidad often talks about the right cut, the right stylist, and working with your curlsStop fighting Mother Nature! Learn to work with your waves and you’ll learn to love your curly hair.” Ouidad tells us that you’ve got to let those curls shine!

According to recent Ouidad surveys, we overwhelmingly agree that the right cut is key – 92% in fact said that it was very important. Interesting results, since 78% of us also felt their stylist didn’t really understand their curls.

So what happens when 97% of us feel our stylists could do better? Sadly, it has left 89% of us in tears at least once due to a bad haircut. Ouidad to the rescue! No one with beautiful natural curls should be in tears because of a badly executed cut and style – not when Ouidad has proven her Rake and Shake technique.

Talk to your stylist – before the cut – and if he/she doesn’t understand your curls, then step away from the scissors and find a curl expert, like Ouidad!

    2 things:
1)What if there is not a stylest in your city (that you know of) that knows curls??
2)The rake and shake method doesn’t seem to work for me. Either my hair is too curly or to thick, but what happens in the video and in real life are two differnt things for me.

    Any tips/suggestions??

    Hi Laura,

First we’d like to give you two Quick Tips From Ouidad Regarding Cutting Curly Hair:

    1. If you can’t find a stylist who is versed in Carving and Slicing, fine one who uses a vertical cutting motion on small sections of hair, as this reduces the weight of curls.
    2. Do not allow a stylist to “layer, texturize or thin” your curls. Because each of these techniques creates less-than-flattering results. Layering can create a shelf-like effect, with shorter layers that can look like thick sausages. Texturizing, on the other hand, creates frizz and unevenness to curl patterns, while thinning can result in lopsided effects, in which half of a curl shrinks and the other half remains long and limp.

    Tips on “Raking & Shaking

In the event that your hair is too curly and too thick you may want to section your hair into six sections instead of the recommended four sections.

Section 1: Bottom layer of hair at the back of the head (at the nape of the neck).
Section 2: Top layer of back of head (from the midpoint of the ear to the back of the head).
Section 3: Left side of head.
Section 4: Right side of head.
Section 5: Top of head – back section.
Section 6: Top of head – front section.

Rub a nickel size dollop of styling gel between your palms and rub your hands together to emulsify the gel.

Begin working the styling gel into each of the sections using the following “Rake & Shake” method beginning with section 1. Don’t forget to use one dollop of gel for each section.

The “Rake & Shake” method: Separate the fingers of one hand like a “rake” and rake the hair you have sectioned off from scalp to ends. Hold the end of the section and gently “shake” the hair back and forth to create the curl in the hair. Let go of the section and allow the hair to fall in a cascading effect. This will create a wave right to the scalp allowing your curl pattern to set in.

We hope these tips will help you get started, have a great day!

Hey i recently purchased some Ouidad products. My hair is incredibly unruly and unmanageable and i tend to complain about it all of the time! It is super kinky and tight, but it is thin and fine, and i have A LOT of hair. It is very frizzy, and i have to put product in it every day. Anyways, i purchased the Ouidad Moisture Lock in leave in conditioner, the Climate COntrol gel and the Botanical Boost. I am not sure if i am doing the Rake and Shake method right because the top part of my head came out incredibly frizzy, while the bottom part was soft curls? Any help or suggestions??
Also, i was wondering, if the Rake and Shake method could ‘lengthen’ your curls if you stretch them out..??
    Thanks!!!

    Hey Jenna-

Thanks so much for your question. Based on the information provided, it’s possible you may not be using the Rake & Shake method properly because you are not getting complete coverage to prevent frizz.

We have a video on our website that shows you how to do the Rake & Shake method: http://www.ouidad.com/video/Styling-Curly-Hair-With-Ouidads-Rake-And-Shake-Technique
