Ouidad Shows You How To Straighten Up … (If You MUST!)

Wednesday, 27 May 2009 by Linda

While we know that you love (and love to flaunt) your naturally beautiful curls, we understand the appeal of a new style – Ouidad says go ahead and straighten occasionally! Be sure though, that you use deep conditioners, so that the occasional blowouts won’t cause major breakage.

Another important tip is to always shampoo and condition before you blow dry, because dirty hair will cause more breakage. Leave a small amount of conditioner (on the ends only) to help protect your mane from heat damage. You should use a large, round, natural-bristled brush; the larger the better to smooth your hair. Spray a leave-in conditioner like our Botanical Boost and keep a few clips around to section the hair.

Click here for some straightening tips specific to hair that ranges from fine to coarse.

To straighten, Ouidad says to divide hair into five sections, top, sides, crown and nape:  Starting at the nape, unclip a one-inch section then re-clip the rest to keep it out of the way.  Hold the brush at the roots with one hand and with the other hold the dryer downward and about two inches from your hair.  Roll the brush down while the other hand follows with the dryer.  Continue this until your whole head is completely dry.  It will probably take 30-40 minutes to complete.

Finally, to perfect the look, blow dry cool for added shine and work in a small amount of a finishing product like our Shine Glaze and enjoy!  But not too much since your lovely natural curls are just a wash away!

I was excited to see the “Ouidad method” of straightening, but I have to say that my curly and coarse hair would not be straight or shiny enough without using a straightening iron. Are you seriously suggesting we could do this with only a round brush and blowdryer?

My curly hair is nice… most days! I like it a LOT and have learned to appreciate it over the years. However, i would LOVE to try straightening it but i know that using a flat iron isn’t good for my hair (It also will not work whatsoever on these curls!). I want to see what it looks like before getting Brazilian Keratin Treatment done on it. How do i do this without a flat iron?!

I forgot to mention the fact that my hair EXPLODES when i use a hairdryer… will this REALLY work??

    Good Afternoon Abby,

Thank you for writing. A flat iron, indeed, is very damaging to your curls. If you don’t wish to use a blow dryer and a large, round and natural-bristled brush you might consider roller setting your hair as this is the least damaging way to straighten the hair. Use the biggest set of rollers you can find according to the length of your hair. You and/or your stylist might have to finish off a bristle brush depending on how straight and/or volumized you’d like the hair to be.

No matter what technique you use to straighten your hair, always remember to shampoo and condition prior to straightening because dirty hair will cause more breakage. Leaving a small amount of conditioner on your ends only will help protect your mane from heat damage.

I have been using a flat iron on my curly hair for yrs now, needless to say, my hair is now flat, even after washing it. My question is: can the “Curl Confidece” Line of products restore my naturally curly hair to curly again? i know that it wont make a complete reverse back to very curly like it used to be right away, but can it eventually reverse the damage and restore my curls shape and bounce to the way they used to be before I started using the flat iron? please respond asap i am dying to try this product

    Dear Carmen,

Thank you for your inquiry on Ouidad Products , a flat iron can be very damaging to your curls. We recommend using Ouidad 12 minute Deep Treatment. The 12 minute Deep Treatment penetrates through the hair cuticle to nourish the internal structure of your curls, restoring bounce and controlling frizz, helping your curls to grow and stay healthy and defined. We is recommend using the 12minuite Deep Treatment 1-2 times per month depending on the health of your curls if your curls are a little dryer you can use it 2-3 times to feed and nourish your curls. The 12 Minute Deep Treatment is the key to restoring your curls and bringing your curls back to life.

As for styling we would recommend the Moisture Lock Leave-in with the Climate Control Heat and Humidity Gel. This duo will help nourish your curls keeping them hydrated while helping you control the volume, frizz giving you bounce and definition. Using the Botanical Boost will help you refresh and your curls throughout the day and or on days that you don’t wash as we only recommend washing your curs 2-3 times a week. Using the Ouidad Rake & Shake technique for the Climate control application, apply a nickel size dollop to palms and work evenly to sections of damp hair. Starting at the nape area take a 2″ section of hair from ear to ear, and rake the Climate Control through; holding section at the end, then shake to reset your curl pattern. Repeat entire process, working in sections to the top of the head to your desired style. Please note all three of the products are found in the Curl Confidence Kit by Ouidad along with a few extra accessories.

If you have any further questions and or concerns about our products and or your curls please feel free to contact us at 1-800-677-4247 and or via e-mail help@ouidad.com and one of our curl experts will be glad to further assist you. We look forward to hearing from you!

    Dear Adriane,

Thank you for writing in, we highly recommend doing 3 Deep Treatments in a row to bring your curls back. Ouidad’s 12 minute deep treatment Used with heat, the mix of proteins and Amino Acids effectively penetrates hair to bond with the cuticle, leaving hair revived and restructured. We would recommend using Ouidad 12 minute Deep Treatment. The 12 minute Deep Treatment penetrates through the hair cuticle to nourish the internal structure of your curls, restoring bounce and controlling frizz, helping your curls to grow and stay healthy and defined. We recommend using the 12minuite Deep Treatment 1-2 times per month depending on the health of your curls. Also if you color treat your curls using the 12 minute Deep Treatment three days before coloring gives the strands substance and allows the colorants to absorb evenly and the repeat the process ten days after coloring, to keep the color molecules bonded and to prevent fading.

You can use the Curl Quencher shampoo and conditioner for in the shower cleansing and moisturizing. The Curl Quencher Shampoo is a gentle, daily cleanser to pamper and nourish dry, thirsty curls. It is best to cleanse your curls every second to third day as frequent shampooing can contribute to dryness; it is safe to condition ever other day by rinsing with warm water for the best results.

To help you eliminate the frizz while styling; you can use our Climate Control Heat and Humidity gel.
