If you think having natural waves and curls means always having to control your curls, it’s time to change your thinking!

There are many more options for curls beyond the ponytail, wild & messy, or spending hours with a image003_may163blow dryer and flat iron.

Ouidad reminds those of you who are hair-gifted to work WITH your curls, not against them.

When people ask: “Ouidad, how do I handle my hair?” Her answer is always “As little as possible!”  Of course, the cut is critical in order to have a style that works with your curls. You have to have a stylist that understands your curls.

Find the right stylist, the right cut, and the right method – customized for your hair – then let your hair and curls flow, relax, and focus on your life, not your hair routine!

What do you suggest for those of us who do not live near a salon that knows the carve and slice method?

    Thanks,

If you can not find a stylist who is versed in Carving & Slicing, find one who uses a vertical cutting motion on small sections of hair, as this reduces the weight of curls.

I had my hair cut by Ouidad herself one time. It was a great cut–but my regular stylist, who charges about 1/4 the cost–cuts my unmanageable curls just as well! It’s about long layers and if you have thick hair, using the right thinning shears. Just speak to your stylist about it! The products, however, cannot be beat! I have tried just about every curly product out there and Ouidad’s are the best!

I’ve had my hair cut by a Ouidad stylist for many years. Remember though, just because they are certified means they will do you justice. My regular stylist was on vacation and I was given another stylist for my regularly scheduled 12 week appointment. I was very disappointed. I do not truly understand how to find the right stylist but I do know that when you do find one, stay with them. It truly is an art and no two artists are alike.

Thank you for writing. Ouidad understands just how difficult it is to find a stylist who really understands how to cut curly hair. We suggest a few ways to improve your search:

    - Word of mouth is the best form of recommendation when shopping for a great haircut.
    - Ask people who have your hair type where they get their hair cut.
    - Upon meeting with a new stylist ask how long they have been in the business and use your intuition.
    - Chose a salon by its reputation and ask for someone who works with your specific hair type. Its also important to determine ahead of time what you want from your stylist.

When you meet a stylist, don’t just simply surrender. Make your experience a partnership. Getting a haircut and finding a stylist is an important undertaking. Not only are paying hard-earned money, but you are submitting yourself to a service that will affect you for the next 2-3 months. So be smart and do your homework before your appointment.

Additionally, below is an excerpt from Ouidad’s “Curl Talk” guide!

“…in the first meeting with your new stylist, a consultation should take place in which you establish a mutual understanding of what is going to happen to your hair. Your main objective is to determine your comfort level with this stylist. Heres what should be covered:
    1. Your lifestyle and not your personal business
    2. How much time you spend on your hair after every shampoo
    3. How often you shampoo
    4. Your weaknesses with your hair
    5. How short or different you’d like to go
    6. If you should start on a gradual plan for your hair or go for the ultimate cut right away
    7. Your likes and dislikes about your hair

    WHAT TO ASK YOUR STYLIST?
    1. What texture is my hair?
    2. How much of a trim do I need?
    3. What are my options with my type of curls?
    4. Can I wear my hair either straight or curly with this cut?
    5. What are my length options?
    6. How often should I see you for a trim?
    7. How much time will l need to spend on styling?

Good luck! We know that finding a stylist is not easy, but we hope some of the tips above will make your journey a little easier.

Thanks for all the tips. I like my stylist and it is a well known salon in the area but they NEVER style my hair curly. If I ask, they will straighten it and then add curls with a curling iron. She also cuts it as if it were straight and I only style it straight once in awhile. I think I need to talk more or move on. Now that my hair is short (the trendy bob style) it is more difficult to style with curls because there aren’t enough long layers. Thanks again :) .

I caved in and had my colorist cut my hair! She’s great with my color and good for trims but I don’t like the haphazard layers. I really hoped to come to Quidad for the carve and slice method of cutting my fine, thick, CURLY, hair. I waited for over a year but never got to NY.
My colorist had me flip my head forward and cut the hair on a slant and trimmed it over 4″ inches to shoulder length which shrinks when curly . I am trying to work with it but they layers are not stacked and it is not a great cut. It took LESS than 10 minutes start to finish. And
I need to have my side swept bangs framing my face better, it’s not working for me as is. My hairdresser does not understand bangs or layers in the front are very important to the style and the first thing you see.
Oh well, she was trying to help and my hair will grow and I can just get trims until next summer. I let it air dry and use the Climate Control product but now that it’s colder I’ll blow dry more often. I need good conditioners and must complete the hair assessment on Ouidad’s site. Any suggestions on what to use to keeep my hair from drying out? I have my roots touched up every month to cover the grey hair that started coming in a few years ago.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Dear Grace,

We would like to recommend applying the Moisture Lock and leave in conditioner on a daily basis and, of course, Ouidad’s Deep treatment for the overall health of your hair. And remember it will take time and patience to grow out that layered haircut.
    Thanks for contacting us!

i have curly hair..but i always have seemed to be very fond of taylor swifts hair. i like the bangs the most. but i have no idea how to get my curly bangs to be like hers without the use of flat ironing.

    Hey Peyton,

Thank you for writing in, A flat iron indeed is very damaging to your curls. In most cases a blow dryer and a large, round and natural-bristled brush and a little time will help you achieve Taylor Swifts swept bangs! Also roller setting your bangs, this is least damaging way to straighten the hair; using the biggest set of rollers you can get; according to the length of the bangs, you can finish off with a natural bristled brush depending on how straight and or volumized you’d like your bangs to be-this will help you achieve a nice wavy bang without the need to flat iron.

Also no matter the technique you use to straighten; always remember to shampoo and condition prior to you straightening, because dirty hair will cause more breakage. Leaving a small amount of conditioner on your ends only will help protect your mane from heat damage.

Below we have provided a tutorial video found on youtube to help you achieve swept bangs! Hope this helps! If you have any further questions please feel free to contact us. Thank you and have a great day.
